San Diego TV anchor slams Danica Patrick

Forget Ron Burgundy in the movie "Anchorman." San Diego now has a real life television reporter bringing embarrassment to the city.

USA Today reports Fox 5 San Diego's Ross Shimabuku slammed Danica Patrick last week stopping just short of calling her - well a word also meaning female dog.

Shimabuku started his sportscast last Monday calling Patrick a "pretty girl" who makes a lot of "money in sponsorships because of it. But what's not attractive is that she's sexy and she knows it."

The report then cut to a video of Patrick's appearance at NASCAR media day and her discussion of how the media always describe female athletes such as herself as "sexy."

"Is there any other word that you can use to describe me?" she asks, while a Fox headline underneath reads: "Danica Patrick. I'm sexy and I know it!"

Shimabuku returns on camera to say "Oh, I've got a few words… Starts with a 'B', and it's not 'beautiful."

The sports anchor closes by saying Patrick "always has a chip on her shoulder, trying to prove something."

No word yet on whether Shimabuku also plays Jazz Flute like Burgundy.

San Diego TV anchor slams Danica Patrick

Don't see this anywhere on sportsline but the TV reporter, Ross Shimabuku, was suspended for a week. Again, there are 5 other San Diego news channels that I watch before the Fox 5 channel. It's just a bad collection of personalities, in my opinion.

San Diego TV anchor slams Danica Patrick

I am not a big Danica fan but this guys remarks were totally uncalled for.
Sadly- this bigots remarks will be ignored. He can say what he wants and
not be called for it because every one is frightened he may pull the "race card"

He can call her a "bitch" ,  thats Ok--- but dont anyone call him a JAP or "slant eye"
---that is not politically acceptable.

Steve from Canada,
where there is a little more tollerance.

I don't know if I have ever seen a so called "professional" ever say something so demeaning on there air. This is a totally uncalled for remark. Yes she is a female, it is also her first race and I am sure she would prefer the emphasis of her sex not be a factor in her pursuit to race in Sprint Cup. She is a welcomed addition to the sport. She can not help it that she is female no more than Ross Shimabuku can help that he is Oriental but nobody is calling him a " a slant eye" or some other derogatory term. Hopefully this will cost him is job or at least a lengthy suspension.

He's correct about 1 point, she does always seem to have a chip on her shoulder. It comes off to me as whiney. She does make most of her money based on her looks, racing is just a means to that end...her advertising vehicle (pun intended). If she were a man, with her record in Indy Car, she'd lost her ride years ago. She's simply a marketing gimmick, which is clear to every other racer out there. I'm sooooooooo glad she's out of Indy Car. I'd like to see her out of racing all together.

can anyone tell me what races she has won?

On April 20, 2008, she became the first women to ever win an Indy Car race by winning the Indy Japan 300.

No, she didn't cause the wreck...but her reaction to it was laughable.  I guess her spotter told her to keep low but instead she cranked the wheel hard left when she didn't have to and crashed with another car.  She might have got caught up in the wreck anyways but she crashed because she panicked.  Stay tuned - plenty more of the same to follow...

Nah, she can do that pretty good by herself, she proved that in Lap 2 of this race.

nukeembaby, she didn't cause the wreck and there were other drivers caught up in it as well. So, what did those other drivers prove? Funny how Elliott Sadler causes a wreck with his stupidity and Danica Patrick is the one who takes the most heat from it for getting caught up in a wreck, something that male drivers have been doing in every single race throughout the history of NASCAR.

Regarding the TV sports anchor, it's interesting that he says Patrick "always has a chip on her shoulder, trying to prove something" as if it's a criticism when it's something that pretty much any other athlete would be praised for.

Ah sexism, ain't it beautiful.

San Diego TV anchor slams Danica Patrick

Danica was interviewed and she decried the frequent references to her and sexuality that so many reporters continually make.  Yet, she  continues to appear in Go-Daddy commercials and sexually suggestive photo shoots thereby provoking such discussions.

Discussions are fine as far as I am concerned.  However, this does not excuse or justify the use of the B word or any such references.  Danica is a pro driver and is also an entertainer. As such, these appearances are to be expected from her just as they are from any attractive female entertainer.  Eventually, as she ages, puts on weight, and has age lines on her face, all that outward sexual appeal will be gone.  In fact, history shows that such appeals rarely last more than a handful of years.  Soon enough the only thing we will be discussing about her is her successes or failures on the track.  In the interest of sport and sportsmanship let's hope this happens soon.
